Amazon.com Product Description An upgrade to the venerable z520, the W300 adds a memory card slot and EDGE high-speed data. The W300 version also adds Walkman music player and styling. Other key features include Bluetooth, a camera, an internal antenna, and a speakerphone. All this goodness is delivered in a package that is smaller and lighter than its predecessor. With dual screens and a VGA camera with video capabilities, the W300 is a serious next-generation phone. It's the perfect handset for folks who want to get all the latest wireless goodies in one chic package.
Your phone, your music--all on the go. See the W300 video. | Design The W300's 65,000-color, 128 x 160 display is housed under the front cover while the outside sports a supplementary 101 x 80 color display that can display time, call information, battery and signal strength, and music player information. The VGA (640 x 480) camera is housed on the front cover as well. The W300 uses an internal antenna--nothing to snag or break off--and a five-way button just above the dial pad is used to control most of the phone's menus and features. Up/down buttons on the left side of the phone can be used for quick volume control and menu navigation. USB data and charging ports, as well as a headset port, are located on the phone's bottom edge. And because the W300's front and rear faceplates are changeable with Sony-Ericsson Style-Up covers, you can dress it up to suit your style. The design also incorporates a unique carry handle on the top of the phone. Calling Features The W300's phone book can hold up to 510 contacts with multiple entries per contact. A call list remembers your most recent missed, received and dialed calls. The phone's voice activated dialing makes calling your friends, family and associates as easy as saying their names. The phone also features a speakerphone for easy, hands-free talking. In addition to a vibrating alert, the phone supports polyphonic ringtones as well as MP3- and AAC-format ringers, allowing you to use portions of your favorite songs to alert you to incoming calls. There's even a bundled application that lets you mix your own ringtones with up to 16 tracks. Picture caller ID lets you assign a photo to specific callers. Similarly, a ringer ID lets you assign ringtones to callers. Lastly, users of Bluetooth headsets will find perfect compatibility with the W300.
Snap some great shots when you're out and about. | Messaging, Internet and Tools The W300 has all the bases covered when it comes to messaging. Support is built in for sending and receiving text, video, graphics and sound via messages. When used in combination with the phone's built-in camera, MMS opens up a whole new world of messaging fun. Instant messaging is also supported and the phone ships with a built-in email client. Getting on the Internet is easy with the W300, as it supports the GPRS protocol, as well as the high-speed EDGE protocol. When used with a carrier data plan and the phone's USB or Bluetooth data capabilities the phone can be used as a wireless modem for laptops and PDAs. T9 text entry, a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users. A number of handy software tools are bundled with the W300 including a voice memo recorder, a calculator, a calendar, and an alarm clock with a timer and stopwatch. Sony Ericsson Sync Station software lets you synchronize your Microsoft Outlook calendar, contacts, notes and tasks with your phone. Imaging and Entertainment The W300 was designed for serious fun. The built-in VGA camera captures stills and video to the phone's 16MB of internal memory. Picture effects and custom screensavers, backgrounds, and themes can be set up to fit your personality. Java support is built into the W300, making it a powerful gaming companion for both online and offline games. Games are downloadable via the MEdia service or you can use the handset's USB or Bluetooth data connections to load more games and files onto the phone. Vital Statistics The Sony-Ericsson W300 weighs 3.32 ounces and measures 3.54 x 1.85 x 0.96 inches. Great Cell Phone December 29, 2008 I had to replace my Motorola Razr and after doing some research decided to go with this phone. Cnet.com rated it well, but like any other phone there were some complaints. I personally love it. So far I have had no issues with it after owning it for five months. I use it as a cell phone and my favorite thing about it is the battery life. It will last for a couple of days with average use. Also I can chop up my mp3s and create my own ring tones. While I don't use it as an mp3 player the sound quality is pretty good on it overall. The orange text behind the black background is great for reading the phone on a sunny day. It is a wonderful phone and I wish I would have discovered Sony phones earlier.
Great phone with a few fallbacks September 16, 2008 I've had my W300i now for about 3 months. Here's my list of positives and negatives of this phone...
+ Great Bluetooth pairing and reception. It was very easy to figure out and pair my first ever Bluetooth device with this phone. The Bluetooth also seems to work beyond the 30 ft range. + I've experienced better reception and fewer dropped calls with this phone versus my last phone. - The keys are extremely hard to find reliably especially if you have big fingers like me. I'm always hitting mulitple keys accidentally. - Turning on the speakerphone during a call is at least a three step process. My old phone was just one key. This is stupid. + Very lightweight. - Did not come with an English manual and shipping company still has not provided one in spite of saying they would months ago.
AVOID ALL SONY ERICSSON PHONES !!! July 19, 2008 1 out of 6 found this review helpful
I am giving this phone and other SONY ERICSSON MODELS a BIG ZERO STAR not because it has any functional flaw in terms of lost signals, voice quality, wifi features etc. Even the phone with latest and greatest of features won't last for more than 6 months because of a very simple flaw in their design.
WITHIN A COUPLE OF MONTHS YOU WONT BE ABLE TO CHARGE IT !! When you put the phone on a charger, the battery charges through a pin-point contact. (LOOK AT THEIR CHARGING INTERFACE CLOSELY AND YOU PROBABLY DON'T HAVE TO READ THE REST OF THE REVIEW). Its literally a pin-point contact. After a couple of months the contact becomes dysfunctional as you would expect from such a contact. Compare it to the charging connector you get on other phones.
Me and my wife bought two SONY phones which has the same interface and the contact broke in 6 months on one of the phones. Luckily both the phones were same so we managed to swap the battery each night before we got a new phone. There is no way out of this dead end except throwing that phone because the battery is perfect but you CANNOT CHARGE it !!...
Imagine someone gave you a Macbook Air with 2 spare batteries but you cannot charge the battery. I don't know what the bozos at SONY were thinking when they designed this phone.
And if that is not enough, they have the same flaky interface for transferring data, or connecting their head phone.
If any sane person reads and understands this review he will NOT BUY SONY ERICCSSON phones which have this NOVEL and CRAPPY interface. I am a big fan of SONY and 90% of all electronic items in my house is SONY, but this is ridiculous. The problem is NOBODY will look at this flaw when buying a cell-phone because its so rare that you cannot charge your cell phone even though the battery is fine !!
I'm 2 for 2 when it comes to buying cell phones July 14, 2008 I've only bought two phones for myself and both of them are still going strong. The Sony Ericsson W300i is terrific for texting and talking because of great signal reception and ease of use. My only complaint would be the camera. Overall, it takes pretty good pics, but they are grainy when transferred to the computer. Same with the video recording. The video is small and not very clear once it's been transferred to the computer. I love this phone though and love the fact that I can change the color of the black part to pretty much any color i want. I found a guy on ebay who sells the covers and backs in hot pink, lime green, cobalt blue, turquoise, etc...nice! I hope that the next phone I get does as well as my first two have.
My very first cell phone was a Nokia 6010. It didn't do much, but it served it's purpose and I now consider it the tank of cell phones because it's still working and I keep it as a back up.
I would marry this phone. April 11, 2008 I spent a few weeks comparing phones before settling on the w300i. It's been about 18 months since I started using it and I've never had any problems with call quality or signal strength. This is one darn good phone!
